Thanks for the post. It's not by coincidence however that the aliens suddenly attack the colony on LV-426. In the theatrical release (which is the real masterpiece in my opinion) what happened to awaken the sleeping horde is made clear when Ripley confronts Burke after the marines are routed the first time. She tells him she just read the colony logs and there's an order in there signed "Burke, Carter J" in which, (after hearing her tell her story in the board room on the space station) he contacted the colony and told them to go look for the alien nest Ripley had described. The looked, they found it, they woke up the aliens and all hell broke loose.
