There's a smart commentary by Tarantino on the DVD for IRON MONKEY where he states what kung fu fans have known all along - CROUCHING TIGER is like a primer to the uninitiated. All the elements are there - the incredible choreography and the gravity-defying leaps and bounds - but all packaged in poetically soft cinematography and a soap opera story line that hints a little at traditional Chinese stories about love and vengeance. For a culture that's almost 5000 years ago, there are plenty of legends to bring to the big screen! For a better movie with better martial arts, try IRON MONKEY or some wild Hong Kong classics like THE BRIDE WITH WHITE HAIR. For fans of the genre, CROUCHING TIGER is to Chinese movies what egg rolls are to spring rolls - not quite authentic but a happy introduction to something new.

Tarantino also once called this "martial arts for tourists." I didn't care for it very much.

Mr Reviewer,
I am quite surprised that such a movie got a 3 out of 5 stars only... but then I read your review and realised that, indeed, someone with such intolerance cannot appreciate this movie. Saying that "once back to the present you forgot about the Sword" just reinforces my thinking that you should stick to Steven Seagal's flicks (where only 1/10 of your brain is required to stay alert in order to follow the Plot).
Good Review!! (please note the sarcastic tone...)
