Best war flick ever.

Since watching this movie 7 years ago I now buy poppies every remembrance day ( I am Canadian), I watch most war documentaries and I finally "get" what soldiers did for us in WWII. Steven Spielberg's gripping first 25 minutes was really all I had to see. I didn't understand how those men could get out of the boats and go ashore with bullets flying at them. The footage was so realistic and the modern cinema's A/V systems are so good I felt a lot of emotions (albeit muted) that the soldiers were feeling. It may be the best tool I can think of to teach modern history students to appreciate what sacrifices have been made to protect democracy...why history is important.

I visited the memorial and walked along the beach, after seeing the film. It certainly adds a better understanding to what exactly it must have been like ... and looking down from the top of the hill I realized just how steep it actually was, and what they must have had to endure to almost _climb_ up (even the film doesn't really examine this much).
