Garfield opened at number 4; making 21,727,611 million. It made a jump from nunber 5 when the estimates to number 4 with the actuals, beating out 'The Stepford Wives.' Considering the competition, 'Garfield' did well, what with Harry Potter and Shrek 2 still in the marketplace it just as easily could have been overlooked and made only 10-12 million opening weekend. I, for one, hope that it does well enough for a sequel. There's alot of unexplored territory with the years of the comic strip to fall back on.

There will almost definitely be a sequel. If Scooby-Doo got one, this will. I haven't seen it yet but after seeing the trailer and hearing all the bad word-of-mouth, I can't say I'm too excited. I usually agree with your reviews though, so maybe I'll like this after all...

The thing is, Scooby Doo made over 100 million and this won't because of all the competition.

It'll still get a sequel. I'd be surprised if it doesn't. Some movies totally flop and still manage to get sequels because they make their money back over time, on the video market, etc. Just look at POLICE ACADEMY or all those HALLOWEEN/FRIDAY THE 13th sequels...most of them don't make that much money.

Great review joe, Garfield is one of the better cgi characters because after about 10 minutes i started to believe he was real thanks to murray's excellent comic timing. a sequel would be great if the same effort is put into the movie lets hope they dont cheap out like others have done soo many times.

Thanks for the comment, jaz:). The film has gone on to do quite well at the box office; having grossed over 58 million through 6/29/04 against a budget of 50 million. The film should finish with over 70 million domestic, plus more worldwide where Garfield is also popular. Pretty good for a film many thought would flop before its release. Go Garfield!

As a great garfield comic lover I have to say I was surprised to see Jim Davis agreeing to produce this movie. Unfortunately the characters in this movie do not even come close to resembling the characters in the comic books... None of the funny, dry sarcastic remarks made in the comics are to be found anywhere in this terrible, terrible production... I was horribly dissappointed with this movie and simply did not understand why all of the characters' original personalities and appearance had to be changed to such an extent that if they would have left out the poorly animated Garfield, you wouldn't even know that the movie was even remotely based on the nerdy Jon Arbuckle and pretty nurse and irritated-with-Jon Liz. To me, CGI-Garfield did not even remotely convince me of being the Garfield that everybody loves from the get-go. Even the opening scene where you see him doing a bomb-dive on Jon to wake him up made me go "hmmm... Since when is Garfield active enough to actually climb on a closet and jump across the room on a bed?". If they made Garfield true to his character, they would never have done that and instead have him looting the fridge before Jon would have woken up. I won't even begin to say anything about the dancing-scene with Odie...To me (and many, MANY other people I have spoken to about this) Garfield-the movie is an abomination and lacks every feel of the real Garfield comics, making this a movie that will go down as one of the worst comic-to-movie conversions in the history of mankind. The only good thing about this movie is knowing that it's going to end after 115 minutes. If they do actually make another Garfield movie, they'd better take a real good look at the comics before they even start writing the title of the movie.

"Garfield The Movie" is wonderful with perfect 3D graphic. Garfield in the movie is really a cool and smart cat who can dance admirably. When he went to the tall building to saved the dog Odie and went down, it was very cool! But it was so dangerous when he dropped down from the tall building.
The story line is superb and jokey, and the actress is very beautiful and cute. It was very incredible for Jon that the girl could love him, I also have the same feeling and the same experience with Jon.
