The Girl Next Door was utterly charming, sexy, and hilarious. Marquette's Eli was downright hysterical and Cuthbert definitely fit the role of Danielle to a T. Olyphant also provided laughs as the porn producer. He looked alot like Johnny Knoxville in this movie; at least I thought so. I hope that this becomes a word-of-mouth hit because it doesn't look like it's going to become a hit any other way; opening at #10 yesterday.

Perhaps it's poor performance this weekend can be attributed to it's lack of actual "porn" in the film, considering "porn" is the theme. Talk about false advertising.

Well, the characters do go to an adult entertainment show in Las Vegas, and having porn in the film would probably qualify the film for a NC-17 rating. As it was, it was still very entertaining.

It also got extremely mixed reviews. Ebert gave it .5 out of 4 while Internet critic Steve Rhodes gave it 4/4. It's definitely a "hit or miss" comedy judging from its reaction. I'm eager to see it.

Ebert also gave 'The Life of David Gale' zero stars and there's no way that film deserved such a rating. Sometimes, his reasoning for disliking films has more to do with personal vendettas moreso than whether the film was actually good or not.

Joe,
I just saw this film last night and was blown away. I expected little and fell in love with it - I totally agree with Rhodes and disagree with Ebert. He was prejudiced because the film deals with pornography and is marketed towards teenagers. He shouldn't judge a film by that - he should judge it based on what it's trying to accomplish.
I thought this one was a lot smarter than most teen comedies, with funnier jokes, more believable characters (teens being played by teens for once!), and a good moral message underneath the outer layer of smut. I also agree about the Olyphant/Knoxville connection.
I laughed like crazy at some scenes. Cuthbert is one of the most talented and beautiful actresses working today - I wasn't familiar with her work before this but she delivered a deep character in a film that could have just been filled with a bunch of corny, lame sex jokes.
Ebert gave American Pie 3/4 and this 0.5/4? I don't believe it. If anything, PIE promoted sex, whereas this encourages true love, which is a fine thing for a film nowadays.
The soundtrack was great, too. I can't wait to buy the DVD. This is one of my favorite films from 2004 and I was very surprised by it -- I expected little (I hate most teen comedies) but this was so much better than I had expected.
Too bad it flopped. I hope it does well on video - it deserves to.
