This was not an "unheralded" masterpiece John. It swept the Oscars ... i forget if it won 7 or 11, but it was some staggering number.
A great movie from a great director, and pretty much the ultimate heist/reversal movie.

It was seven Oscars. The only three films to win all eleven were Titanic, Ben Hur and, of course, The Return of the King.
What I meant by "unheralded" is that now, with crap like "The Lord of the Rings" being called "number one film ever," this movie is being shrugged down many top lists (number 60 on IMDb and falling last I checked).

I think this is worthy of 5 stars. In defense of the critic, he has reviewed over 350 films on this site, and his average rating is 3.36 stars. You can see this statistic from his Staff page.
