Great review, and I agree abou the soundtracks... I've seen Carpenter interviewed and he always talks about his compositions with great pride, and yet they all sound the same. It's hard to say whether the budget constraints that have made the savings in composer salary provided by his doing his own scores have helped him make more movies, or insured that his films continue to be low budget affairs.

I do disagree about the place in his filmography that this film holds. Again within the constraints of it's budget Escape from LA was an acceptable followup to Escape from New York, and in order to accept this as his last good film, would mean you would have to ignore They Live, which is in my estimation and the estimation of many others, one of his best films, and an underrated and underappreciated classic, with a substantial cult following.

I'm not a big follower of Carpenter--I just haven't seen many of his films.

I sat down to watch this with an open mind because I had heard such good things about it, and I enjoyed the first half hour or so, but it starts to get just a bit too weird for me after a while.

It's obviously a very strong cult comedy, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and such films, and so I guess I'm just not a part of the craze.

Great review, though. Interesting to read someone's views coming from the other direction.

I'll probably see it again sometime when it comes on TV.

I didn't like 'They Live' nor 'Escape from LA' - LA seemed to be a retread and 'They Live' suffered from its lead actor, I forgot his name, but wasn't he a wrestler? I still think Halloween, 'The THing, and Escape from NY are Carpenter's best. Big Trouble is up there but after that, he seemed to have run out of creative steam.

Yes, They Live starred "Rowdy" Roddy Piper. This fact did not bother me in the least, since the character was a rough Trucker type.

They Live includes what has proven to be an enormously influential hand to hand combat scene, and has been immitated ever since.

It did seem an odd choice to use a Pro Wrestler at the time, but now that we have The Rock starring in action films, it doesn't seem so far fetched anymore. Of course a lot of people thought it was ridiculous to take an Austrian Body Builder who could barely speak english let alone act, and put him in front of the camera too.

I've never even heard of They Live. I've heard of Escape from New York and LA and The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13 (or whatever it's called), but some of the others you're mentioning I don't have a clue about! :)

P.S. Ah-nuld's still the best!

"I need a va-cah-tion."

The Rock isn't exactly my cup of tea. I don't like wrestling and I never liked Hulk Hogan's films.

"3 Ninjas at Mega Mountain" is simply one of the worst films ever made.

Big Trouble In Little China is the greatest movie ever made! It is sad that this beautifully written review had negative things to say about BTILC. I thought the soundtrack worked well throughout the film, especially in the airport and alley fight scenes. I also thought the graphics were pretty good for the time period. The only graphic i thought was bad was when Rain blew the read ball at Jack. The fight scenes were well staged and very energetic. Overall, Moreover, In conclusion, I thought this movie is the greatest cinematic experience of all time. Everybody should see this movie and respect it for what it is: a fun movie with a lot of great moments.
