This is my personal favorite of all the Jim Thompson adaptations I've seen. It's also Jason Patric's best performance. A shame more people haven't seen this dark little Gem.

while jason patric hasnt always picked the right roles - as you mentioned with speed 2 - i feel that he his getting his career back on track with Narc and the upcoming The Alamo. The Alamo may be a bit too mainstream, but his performance in Narc was outstanding. He is very good here too.
