I originally saw this on a raucous midnight feature double bill with Night of the Living Dead. Only in comparison to that film, could this movie be called "slick". In the end, I enjoyed the film, although not quite as much as you did.

It clearly suffered from budget constraints, and some of the action sequences are stilted, but it did display Craven's interest in exploring unconventional plot structures.

It's probably worth stating, that this film is probably the best advertisement for German Shepherds that will ever be committed to celluloid.
